Sea turtles in Matina
This is the main program at the Refugio de vida silvestre Laguna Urpiano and thanks to which the implementation of all the others is possible.
To preserve the sea turtles we have to fight against the tradition of the consumption of meat and eggs of the turtle so deeply rooted in the population.
For centuries the consumption of these products was considered as a delicacy that also possessed aphrodisiac properties. This belief is not only false, but also totally unsustainable from the point of view of the species.
Our main work in this program is the patrolling of the beach during the nights when the sea turtles come out to deposit their eggs and recover as many nests as possible before the poachers do it. These eggs are deposited in our hatchery, which is a closed and guarded 24 hours a day, where we look forward to the birth of our baby sea turtles.
In addition we maintain a database of nesting females following the numbering of their name plates and take other scientific data that can help the preservation of the species.
Remember that sea turtles are the basis of several food chains, and that protecting them, we also contribute to the protection of many other species.
